Beauty is often found in the most unlikely places. On a cold winter afternoon, Udayan found these delicate lotus flowers in a secluded pool of water at the Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad. The play of light on the water, the leaves and the petals of the flowers is what caught Udayans attention in this frame.

Through pinched fingers, a stream of colored chalk powder flows uninhibitedly to leave a wonderful mosaic of flowers, leaves, birds and abstract designs. In South India, Muggulu (as its known in AP) is a treasured art form passed on among women from generation to generation. This festive motif deftly drawn on the street outside Udayans home seemed to him the perfect way to herald 2013. Welcome 2013!

Amazing shapes, intricate patterns, numerous colors all synergized by a warm glowing incandescent light. Every time Udayan drove by this shop, he was drawn to this festive display. Aulus Cornelius Celsus once said “Live in rooms full of light“. Who can resist such an alluring room full of light?

Lotus pond is a small serene water body in the heart of Hyderabad city lined with a beautiful park where many people go for morning walks amidst the verdant natural beauty. Hidden among the ruins of the Golkonda Fort lies an ancient Kali temple. Believed to be built during the time the Kakatiya reigned over this region, the temple lies sandwiched between two huge rocks. Udayan was captivated by the brilliantly painted rock faces and wanted to photograph it. This royally dressed young bride appeared out of nowhere at the head of the small wedge between the rocks completing the frame magically.

The sparkling bottles, bright colors and a heavy sweet smelling fragrance drew Udayan to this shop at Charminar, Hyderabad. On display were rows of small decorative bottles with a variety of attar, a natural perfume oil derived from botanical sources, for tourists to buy as souvenirs. The attractive display of the colorful liquids in clear cut bottles under the luminescent lights were absolutely picture perfect.

The Paigah Tombs are a series of courtyards that houses tombs of the Paigah Nobility enclosed by walls sporting a wealth of lattice work and exotic designs in marble. Competing with each other to catch our eyes are geometrical designs done on the entrances and walls. A lone burqa clad woman watching over this historical masterpiece in the courtyard across where Udayan was standing made this dream like frame come alive.

A colony of bats made their home amidst the ancient stone arches at the Golkonda Fort in Hyderabad. Hanging upside down in this dark and frankly quite smelly place which perhaps has never seen the light of day seemed very easy to them. Rarely visited by guests, the bats seemed quite surprised at Udayans intrusion when he walked into their home and he did not waste a minute to catch their surprise on camera.

A lively young lady at the idol makers colony happily posed for Udayan against an idol of Devi Durga, the invincible Indian goddess. They were migrant artisans who created idols for worship to cater to the growing demand of celebrating elaborate festivals in urban India. She had made Udayan promise that he would give her a few pictures as a keepsake later, so he went back 2 days later to keep his promise only to realize that a cruel twist of fate had taken her life in an accident at home the same day this image was clicked. Mecca Masjid, a heritage building in the old city of Hyderabad, is one of the oldest mosques in the city and one of the largest Mosques in India. People and pigeons flock together here, each with their own reasons. While people seek divine blessings or simply find a peaceful place to while some time away, pigeons flock here to find something to eat from benevolent and pious humans. Udayan particularly liked the many actions which were taking place at this time with the kids running and pigeons flying yet everyone appeared in sync with each other in this frame.

What makes an eatery successful is the food, ambience and the service. This particular eatery bowled Udayan over with the ambience more than anything else. Big courtyards, complex labyrinths, a maze of arched walkways and scores of rooms. Golkonda Fort is the right place for curious tourists to spend their time unraveling the stories of past times. These two boys were a part of a school educational excursion. Udayan caught them wander off into one of the many geometrical corridors the fort is peppered with. What was the purpose of these corridors that went nowhere? Perhaps they were used just as it is used now, a safe place to “walk the talk“.

What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare.~Poet William Henry Davies
Lines that ring true in todays fast paced lifestyle. Who has the time for a leisurely conversation, a languid cup of coffee, the solitude of enjoying a book, the luxury of gazing at life go by? Udayan found this frame particularly compelling as two people from opposite backgrounds, places and ages seemed to have found a way to slow down and savour a moment in time, each in their own way.

The impressive arches of the Golkonda Fort, symmetrical and graceful, leads you into a complex labyrinth of rooms, stairways, corridors and open yards, each shrouded in layers of history. Mosques, ladies rooms, public conference rooms, war rooms, market places, this place was obviously a hub of activity in years past. Thronged by tourists, the fort has survived the ravages of time and still holds its place as a hub of activity in modern times. While one tourist was mesmerized with the architecture of the Fort, the others were off to explore more.

Migrant artisans lined up on a pavement making and selling their wares is quite a common sight in Hyderabad. A group of drummers lived on the pavement near the road that leads to the business district in Hyderabad with their extended families. Each male bread earner of the family converted a tree into their shop, hanging rudimentary drums that they and their immediate family made from low hanging branches. What caught Udayans eye was the impressive sales strategy these drummers adopted. They did not bother selling their wares to people walking on the road. They focused on people travelling in cars with their kids catching their attention by playing a peppy tune on the drums because this customer base guaranteed a good selling price over the pedestrians.

A government appointed guard and his family oversee the safety of the precious Paigah Tombs, a series of mausoleums built for the Paigah nobility. These structures are specimens of remarkable artistry showing itself off in exquisite inlaid mosaic work with trellis made up of a variety of geometrical and floral designs in marble. This young daughter of the keeper was following Udayan while he went around photographing the amazing work and found herself become the subject of his frame next.

Taramati Baradari, an ancient monument on a hill top held Udayan captivated for the sheer magic of the ambience and the breathtaking lights. Dreaming of times in the old world, Udayan imagined Taramati singing while her companions danced around the elegant arches. Recreating the ambiance today, this dancer made this picture travel a hundred years back in time.

Udayan would have almost missed this man had he not called out to him urging him to buy something from the shop. The avenue was a shopping haven and the profusion of shops made for a very entertaining experience. With so many shops vying for the customers attention, it was a matter of who stood out amongst the rest in terms of being the brightest, biggest, posh-est, most decorative, cheapest, etc. Yet this spunky man, nondescriptly camouflaged amongst the mannequins, caught Udayans attention because he could not resist the lure of a “model” jump at him. He was compelled to buy some clothes at this shop impressed with their marketing strategy. This guards objective was to attract customers and he did that well indeed!

Hyderabad 2006
Canon AE-1 Program with Canon FD 50mm f/1.4

While looking for an unusual way to shoot the Charminar, Udayan noticed this frame in one of the cars participating in a vintage car rally close by. It had all the elements he associates with Hyderabad in it - the Charminar, an iconic landmark of Hyderabad; the vintage car representing the old royalty synonymous with the city and the auto rickshaw, a standing reminder of the chaotic modern lifestyle it has come to be known of in recent times.
