A mega city, a celluloid haven, an economic powerhouse, Mumbai is a city of sharp contrasts. The city will charm and frustrate you in equal measure. Once can live cheap as well as live a life of luxury here. Mumbai accommodates all. These local kids were selling balloons in the evening to earn some pocket money at the popular Chowpatty Beach, with the Nariman Point business district in the distance. The playful kids however could not contain their excitement about the dream-like sunset and pleasant cool evening. Udayan captured them having fun at work!

It was nearing evening when Udayan saw these local fishermen on a coracle approach the base of Nagarjuna Sagar Dam. The dam was closed and the water dry, yet the ominous possibility of it being opened anytime increases the risk they undertook to earn their livelihood. An old lady sat at the inner gate of the Srimukhalingam Temple in Srikakulam district (Andhra Pradesh, India) resting a little before she entered the sacred inner sanctum of the temple. Built to venerate Lord Shiva, this temple is one of the trio built by King Kamarnava II of the Eastern Ganga dynasty in the 8th century and is considered a very important Hindu pilgrimage center. Her elegant dance like hand posture and youthful gaze complimented the graceful figurines adorning the wall of the ancient temple. Yet, the signs of age creeping upon both their visage. Udayan captured this enchanting frame hoping to immortalize the lady at the divine gate.

The poised roar of falling water, restrained yet defiantly powerful shadowed the soft murmur of the gurgling stream just below at Kempty Falls. Nature and man complimenting each other in a valiant effort to restore the grandeur of the walloping waterfall from a landslide. Udayan asked many people on his way to the Srimukhalingam temple about how far it was. Each time he was told it was 5 minutes away. Two hours later he was greeted by a row of tall palms he was familiar with as he had seen them on Google Earth. He knew the temple was nearby. He found this trio of temples worth the long drive simply for the beauty it held. This mural is of Lord Ganesha, a revered deity amongst Hindus.

A photographer often needs someone with unquestioning patience to accompany/help on certain shoots. This time, a strong breeze forced Udayan to enlist his fathers help to steadily hold the spiked stem on which the beetle rested so he could get a good shot. A good half an hour later, an exasperated dad, miffed by the scorching sun and boring activity of holding on to a leaf left in a huff. But the deed was done! The image was taken.

Inspiration often comes from the smallest of sources. According to legend, Robert Bruce was a disheartened King as he had lost a battle and was hiding in a cave. He saw a spider trying to reach the roof failing repeatedly. After every fall, the spider tried again not losing heart. The King observed his perseverance and when the spider reached its web in the seventh attempt, he was filled with new hope and courage. He gathered his forces, fought bravely and successfully made his country free. The story serves to illustrate the maxim: “If at first you do not succeed, try again.“ Udayan clicked this image of the maimed spider as it reminded him of this story.

Mumbai, the city of dreams, is characterized by inordinate traffic jams and congested living areas. Udayan was especially fascinated by the indomitable spirit of Mumbaikars. They are masters of making the most of their space cramped living conditions. At the Mahalaksmi Dhobi Ghat, a well known open air laundromat, Udayan found these two boys making best use of the little space between clothes hung out to dry. They found a piece of sky free enough to fly a kite.

The topic of the photographic project that Udayan was working on was titled “Click Against Cancer.” Trying to depict this topic in unusual way was difficult, yet that is what he wanted to do. As time was running out and the deadline nearing, he was always looking out for the perfect image. At a traffic signal, he saw this boy selling chewing tobacco (Guthka) hurriedly moving from one car window to another. He had to strike a deal before the lights turned green. It was a poignant reminder of the risk one is exposed to even from childhood. One has to stop using tobacco to ensure a cancer free life. The lights only turn green when we stop.

It was very cold and Udayan was not dressed to combat it. To make matters worse, he had no place to go until he boarded his train in the evening. The best option he had to battle the numbing cold was to walk. He chanced upon a temple being constructed on a hill. As he was climbing the steps, he came across this man carrying sand on this contraption that looked like a weighing scale. He had to climb 1000 steps each time to carry a small load of sand from the bottom of the hill as manual labor was the only way to carry building materials for a construction on a hill top.
