Theyyam is a famous ritual art form that originated in North Kerala which brings to life great ancient stories. It includes dance, mime and music along with awe inspiring costumes in monochromatic colors. It celebrates the beliefs of the ancient tribals who gave a lot of importance to the worship of heroes and the spirits of their ancestors.

Udayan think he was fortunate to see an open theatre dance performance and invocation in a remote village in Kerala where villagers assumed these fantasy costumes and performed in front of the shrine worshipping the village god. The villagers seemed to think that the more big and awe inspiring the costume, the better is the representation of the god being worshipped.

Legend has it that Kandanar Kelan, an ancient warrior, was out hunting in the forest when it suddenly caught fire. Finding no other means of escape Kandanar Kelan climbed a tree but the fire consumed him still. When another warrior god saw Kandanar Kelan’s ashes in the burnt forest, he traced his form with a bow and gave him back his life. The Theyyam celebrates both Kandanar Kelan’s revival and his anger towards the fire which burnt him up.
