This majestic Lighthouse was built in 1868 and is the first one to be set up in India. It is located in Bheemili, the second Municipality to be established in the Indian mainland. Perhaps, this is why the Lighthouse is well maintained and fully functional even to this day. Framed against a picturesque sky, Udayan captured this arresting view of the citadel on the shores of Bheemili beach one splendid evening.

The “devil” can strike fear in anyone’s heart but this brave little gypsy girl. Standing defiantly against a roadside tree adorned with Indian devil masks, she seemed secure by the knowledge that they will keep all evil away from her. Gypsy families often pitch illegal settlements on busy pavements and sell these handcrafted devil masks that are believed to ward off evil if hung outside homes. True to her belief, these masks were therefore guarding her and her home on the streets of Vizag.

An enchanting sunrise at Vizag often entails the various elements that Udayan captured in this image. A gorgeous sky, serene sea, distant ships, few morning walkers, some divine music softly playing on loud speakers along the road, lots of greenery and a calmness you can otherwise find in temples or prayer houses. Udayan could not resist capturing this frame for eternity.

Driving through hills on dirt roads, Udayan reached a small tribal hamlet deeply nestled somewhere between Araku and the Orissa border. He saw a few structures where grains were stored, some chickens, some goats, two rows of thatched dwellings, a few old women and children. The kids were very shy and ran away as soon as he tried to approach them, yet came back to see the car he was travelling in. He handed them a bar of chocolate. They were delighted. This little girl in the image caught his particular attention because she was very wary. She kept her distance from both the car and Udayan, yet never letting him go out of her sight, lightly hopping behind some cover with her little brother wedged on her hips as soon as he turned to look.

Udayan spotted these youngsters walking on the streets of Vizag wearing red clothes in accordance to their faith. It felt like they were a team, busily going about their routine task of reminding passersby of the fact that God was omnipresent and could be found everywhere. They tugged at peoples devotion to make a living, yet could not resist the urge to take a break in between. Surely, God also needs a break sometimes.

Udayan regularly went to a magazine stall at the RTC Complex, a busy bus depot in the middle of an even busier business hub in Vizag. The ebb and flow of travellers in various stages of their journey coupled with the hallmarks of a busy business hub made for an interesting study. This unkempt row of colorful letter boxes belonging to various media houses, TV channels and other local companies intrigued him always. So many letters would wait in anticipation of reaching its destination, the reader, just like the passengers around them. Recently, a pillar was built in front of these post boxes thereby making this picture impossible to replicate in future.

The long winding roads along the virgin beaches of Vizag make for a fantastic drive. As Udayan turned around the corner near the Buddhist ruins at Thotlakonda, he saw this vista open up. The tall palm trees, the tranquil sea, red sand and perfect weather made this image a fitting memoire of the essence of Vizag.

This image was shot during the holy month of Ramzan at a local Mosque. The building was decorated with lights and Udayan found the form of the crescent within the shape of the window against the glowing green light fascinating. He asked a devotee to pose for him at the window, but got refused. A short while later, another devotee walked up to the window, totally oblivious to Udayan. As he stood still looking at the busy street below, Udayan got the opportunity to take this perfect shot.

This image was shot at Erra Matti Dibbalu, a maze of deeply gullied red sand dunes frequented by tourists, couples in search of a quite place to romance, film crews to shoot critical scenes, nature lovers as well as the local residents who enter this maze to find fodder for their cattle and firewood for their hearth. Vehicles are not allowed as the passages can become very narrow without warning. The only means of transportation is walking or the trusted carts pulled by cattle. The loose sand makes it difficult to venture deep into the heart of the dunes and Udayan was drawn to the mystery of what lay beyond the apparent.

The RK Beach at Visakhapatnam is a popular tourist spot and usually thronged by lots of locals and tourists alike. Because of the high footfall and constant activity on the beach, it is not very popular among the fishermen who like to reserve their activities to more secluded beaches a little distance away. Therefore, this group of fishermen organizing their nets on this beach was quite an oddity. What caught Udayans attention was the single minded devotion to their activity. They did not mind being covered with these heavy nets as they trudged along the beach under the scorching sun. They looked like mechanical cog wheels working in unison to complete the task at hand.

Udayan arrived at the fishing harbour in Visakhapatnam close to 5 in the evening. He had heard that local fishermen sold their day’s catch every evening as they brought their fishing vessels in. This old woman caught his attention because she sat in the quietest corner guarding her treasure of dead fish least the scavenger crows fed on them. She had a vacant look on her face just like the dead fish around her. She told him that she would wait everyday to gather the leftovers from the days catch so she could dry them in the sun and sell it later. This is what kept her alive in “The City of Destiny”.

Udayan had waited a long time for his order to arrive and he was getting as restless as he was hungry. Looking around, he saw the restaurant was filled with chattering families, lots of laughter, groups of gregarious youngsters and bustling waiters. In a corner, through the glass door, he saw this lonely man standing guard at the entrance. It was as if the glass door created a huge gulf between the guard outside and the merry crowd inside. Worlds kept apart by merely a piece of glass!
